Becca Lampman of Vancouver won the 48 player Gresham Open held at Mt. Hood Community College on January 5-6. She won 4 games and had a 1/2 pt bye. She beat the only master rated player, Carl Haessler of Lake Oswego, in the fifth round. Neil Dale of Portland was the tournament director. The December 29th G/60 event at the Portland Chess Club had 22 players. Yogi Saputra of Albany Oregon won the event with 3.5-.5. Gregori Alpernas of Lake Oswego Oregon handled the TD tasks. The crosstable can be found on the USCF website.
The United States will play in the Pan American Team Championship, a qualifier for the 2013 World Team Championship. The event will be held January 24-30 in Campinas, Brazil, near Sao Paulo.
The US team, in the absence of Hikaru Nakamura and Gata Kamsky, who have prior commitments to compete in conflicting events in Wijk aan Zee and Gibraltar, will consist of Alex Onischuk, Varuzhan Akobian, Alex Lenderman, Ray Robson and Sam Shankland. Yury Shulman will serve as team coach and John Donaldson as team captain.
This will be the first time the US has fielded an entry for the Pan American Team in its over-forty-year history. Grateful thanks go to Rex and Jeanne Sinquefield and the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis for making the US participation possible.

There was a tie for first place between Patrick Van Dyke of Maple Valley WA and Bryce Tiglon of WA at 3.5-.5. They drew with each other in round four. Three players had 3-1: Daniel and Samuel He of Redmond plus Noah Fields of Tacoma. USCF crosstable link.
Steven Breckenridge of Gresham and Andrew Larson of Florida tied for first place with 4-1 scores. The both took a 1/2 point bye and drew with Bill Heywood. At 3.5-1.5 were Alfred Pechisker and James Chan both of BC and Heywood of Portland. 19 players in this section.
The lower section was won by a 5-0 score of Dillon Murray of Gresham. Tied for 2nd at 4-1 were Bradley Bogle of Oregoan and Valentine Molchanov of Beaverton. 23 players in this section.
The usual TD, Gary Dorfner of Tacoma, in the usual place, the Tacoma Chess Club, held the Christmas Congress on Dec 8-9 with just 9 players. Alan Bishop of Tacoma took a 1/2 point first round bye and then won the rest of his games for a 3.5-.5 score including a win over NM Viktors Pupols (3-1) of Kingston, WA.
This Chess Tournament was held Dec 1-2, 2012 at the Seattle Chess Club under the direction of Fred Kleist of Seattle. Viktors Pupols of Kingston won the event with a perfect 4-0 score. The event had 13 players and a time control of G/125 with delay of 5. The cross table can be found on the USCF website.
The 2012 National K12 Championships that were held 30 November – 2 December at the Marriott Orlando World Center Resort, Orlando, FL had 10 players from Washington and Oregon attending.
Kyle Haining of Kellogg Middle School, Lake Forrest Park WA played in the 95 player 7th grade section and scored 5.5-1.5 tying for 5th-9th place just .5 point behind the 1st-4th place winners. In the same section were Olga Cherepakin of Lakeside Middle School living in Lake Forrest Park WA (4-3) and Konstant Velichko of Inglewood Jr. High in Sammamish WA (4-3).
Marcell Szabo of Lowell Elementary, Seattle WA placed clear first in the 131 player 6th grade section with 6.5-.5. Also in the section with a 4.5-2.5 score was Seth Talyansky of Portland Jewish Academy, Portland OR.
The 5th grade section of 125 players had Jan Buzek of APP at Lincoln, Seattle WA scoring 5-2 and Karen Haining of Ridgeway Elementary, Lake Forrest Park WA scoring 2.5-4.5.
The 4th grade section had 163 players and Marc Huang of Bellevue Children’s Academy scored 6-1 tying for 1st-6th place. Sean Alexander Van-zo-li of Catlin Gabel School in Portland OR scored 4-3 in this section.
The 3rd grade section had 145 players including Aaryan Deshpande of Audubon Elementary, Redmond WA scoring 5-2.
