Here’s the description of the presentation that will be given at all locations:

Thinking with Chess: Teaching Children Ages 5-14 is a FREE seminar for teachers, librarians, after-school instructors, chess coaches, counselors, and parents. Bring your chess set and board if you have one. The seminar requires no prior knowledge of chess. Both novices and veteran chess players can use its innovative lesson plans for teaching groups of children. In the Thinking with Chess seminar, 1989 U.S. Women’s Chess Champion Alexey Root, Ph.D., connects chess with skills important to academic success, such as classifying, pattern recognition, decoding, creating, and predicting. At the seminar, you participate in two of the lesson plans from her book Thinking with Chess: Teaching Children Ages 5-14 (Mongoose Press, 2012). You leave the seminar able to teach those two lesson plans and with chess knowledge too. There will be a book signing right after the talk.

Cheers,
Alexey Root

US Team in Brazil

The United States will play in the Pan American Team Championship, a qualifier for the 2013 World Team Championship. The event will be held January 24-30 in Campinas, Brazil, near Sao Paulo.

The US team, in the absence of Hikaru Nakamura and Gata Kamsky, who have prior commitments to compete in conflicting events in Wijk aan Zee and Gibraltar, will consist of Alex Onischuk, Varuzhan Akobian, Alex Lenderman, Ray Robson and Sam Shankland. Yury Shulman will serve as team coach and John Donaldson as team captain.

This will be the first time the US has fielded an entry for the Pan American Team in its over-forty-year history. Grateful thanks go to Rex and Jeanne Sinquefield and the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis for making the US participation possible.
