Due to an error, the full-page ad for the 33rd Annual Sands Regency Reno – Western States Open, Oct. 16-18 in Reno, Nevada, was not repeated in the October issue of Northwest Chess. However, it’s not too late to register for the event. See the full-page ad/entry form on the NWC website and mail your entry by October 9, or you can also register onsite. This is one of the top chess tournaments of the year, offers prizes of up to $2,000 in open and class sections, and there is always a good turnout of players from the Northwest. As of this writing, hotel rooms are still available at the chess rate – call the Sands Regency Casino Hotel, 1-866-386-7829, and ask for code USCHESS1015.
The Portland Chess Club holds a monthly quad tournament (known as a “Quad 45” because of the 45-minute time control) that usually takes place on the third Saturday of each month. This tournament is billed as a great way for new players to get introduced to the PCC and USCF-rated tournament chess as well as for seasoned veterans to battle against similarly rated opponents. The format is a 3-round quad, ambulance G/45; d5. One section may run as a 6-player Swiss depending on the number of players.
The August 2014 event top-rated section ended in a 2.5-point tie between Karl Stump and Jeff Jack Austin after the two players drew each other in the first round. See the USCF crosstable.
For more details on this monthly tournament, see the PCC website or the NWC calendar pages.

Notice from Washington Chess Federation President
Due to lack of sign-ups, WCF has decided to cancel the Wenatchee Valley Open chess tournament next weekend (Nov 10-11). Please cancel any hotel reservations that you may have made. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience.
Luckily for us, the convention center will not charge a cancellation fee!
We will continue to search for opportunities to hold an event in Wenatchee sometime in the future.
