Some Daring Sacrifices

Postby PaulWeaver » Sat Jun 22, 2013 11:07 am

The sacrifices occurred in the game Alexander-Weaver 6/4/13. the setting was black had castled queenside, white pawns on e5, d4, f4, black knights on d7 and c6, black bishops on e7, b7, queen on c7, pawns on a6, b5, c4 d5 white queen on f3 and white had castled kingside. Rather than let white consolidate and let his chances slip away black hit out boldly with ... fxe5, fxe5 Ndxe5!?, dxe5 Nxe5 Qf4, Rf8, Qg3, Bd6, Bf4 Rxf4! Qxf4, d4! regaining a piece thanks to a pawn fork of white's knight on e2 and Bishop on c2. After some complicated play and too much thinking by white (this was a 15 minute game) his flag fell in the following position:

white: h2, g2, Kg1 Rf1, Rc1, Qg3, a2
black: Qb2, c2, Bd5, Rd8, Kc8, h7, g7, b5, a6, c4

in this final position the pressure is clearly on white and black has chances to score the point by advancing his queenside pawns down. If the queens come off the board white will be hard pressed to stop the pawns.
