unusual opening play

Postby PaulWeaver » Fri Jul 05, 2013 7:12 pm

Monday I found myself confronted with an unusual countergambit: 1 e4 e5 2 f4 f5?! With only a limited amount of time (this was a 15 minute game I went with 3 exf5 and eventually won though it involved holding onto the pawn through some very tortuous play (I had to get my queenside pieces into play after the queens came off the board). After the game some two way communication with a young man who I had played the previous game revealed some decent alternatives: 3 d4! 3 d3. the latter less aggressive but solid.

the other unusual opening was the 2 knights tango: 1 e4 Nc6 2 d4 Nf6. At the time of this game I went with 3 e5 and got into an Alekhine's Defense type of situation. Shuffling the wood when I had some time on my hands reveals 3 d5 as a very healthy and aggressive alternative!
