Paul Weaver - Chess Titans (level 10) 3/28/14 French Defense 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 dxe4 4 Nxe4 Bd6 5 Nf3 Be7? 6 Bd3 f5? 7 Neg5! h6?? 8 Nf7! (the attack has to be decisive) Kxf7 9 Ne5+ Kf6 (the only move) 10 Qh5 Qxd4 11 f4! Bb4+ 12 Ke2 (afterwards I analyzed 12 c3 but the resulting position is a bit obscure since white hasn't grabbed the rook on h8 yet) Ke7 13 Qf7+ Kd8 (adjourned and resumed the following day) 14 Qxg7 Bc5! 15 Rf1 Nc6! (the only way he doesn't lose his shirt) 16 Qxh8 Ne7 (adjourned. This position would made for a good Thursday puzzle at chessgames.com. At work I set up the position and analyzed it without touching the pieces and found the solution) 17 Qg7! c6 18 c3!! (winning a piece or the queen) Qa4 19 b3 Qc5 20 b4 Bxb4 21 cxb4 Qxb4 22 Bd2 Qa4 23 Nf7+ Kc7 24 Nxh6 Bd7 25 Qe5+! (the direct 25 Nxg8 would be a blunder thanks to ... Rg8 by black) Kc8 26 Nxg8 Nxg8 (here white set his sights on getting the queens off the board) 27 Rfc1 Qa3 28 Qc5! Qxc5 (I discovered afterwards that 28 ... Qb2 allows 29 Qf8 check winning a rook) 29 Rxc5 Nf6 30 Be3 Nd5 31 R5c1 Nxe3?? (this allows white to win very easily with hardly any thought. The knight is the only thing keeping white from running wild. White would still have won of course by placing his other rook on b1, pawn on g3, a4 and not allow black to play ... Nb4 after an ... a5. About now black would be in zugswang and white starts picking up material on the queenside and of course puts the game away by advancing the "h" pawn at the right moment) 32 Kxe3 a5 33 Rab1 a4 34 Rb6 a3 35 Rcb1 Ra7 36 h4 c5 37 Bb5 Bxb5 38 R1xb5 Ra6 39 Rxa6 bxa6 40 Rxc5+ Kb7 41 h5 a5 42 h6 e5 43 fxe5 f4+ 44 Kxf4 Kb6 45 Rc1 Kb5 46 h7 Ka4! (an amazing stalemate trap by the program) 47 h8Q Kb4 48 Qb8+ Ka4 49 Rc4 mate
