Paul Weaver - Chess Titans (level 10) 7/14/14 Sicilian 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Qb6?! 5 Nf3 (experimental. 5 Nb3 is much better discouraging ... Bc5) e5 6 Nc3 Bc5 7 Qd2 (the problem is either e2 or d2 blocks a bishop from getting into play) Qd8 (8 Nd5 has to be respected) 8 Bc4 Nf6 9 0-0 d6 10 h3 (the plan white drew up involved f4 and Bxf4) Bd7 11 Kh1 Na5 12 Bd3 Nc6 13 Ng5? (this doesn't accomplish anything. Much more to the point is Nh2 followed by f4) h6 14 Nf3 0-0 15 Nh2 Nb4 16 Bc4 b6 17 Bb3 Bc6 18 Qe2 a5 19 a3 Na6 20 f3 a4 21 Ba2 Nh5! 22 Qe1 (the only move!) Nc7 23 Ng4 Nf6 24 Ne3! (now white gets on the right track) h5 25 Nf5 Ne6 26 Be3! (trading off black's strongest piece and a key defender of d6) Bxe3 27 Qxe3 Re8 28 Rad1! (the beginning of the end) h4 29 Nxd6 Re7 30 Nxf7! (much stronger than the gain of the exchange with Nf5. Now the bishop on a2 gets to play a vital role in the game) Qc7 31 Nd6 Qb8 32 Nf5 Re8 33 Rd6! (weaker is the direct Qg5) Bd7 34 Qg5! (threatening mate thanks to the pin) Nh5 35 Qxh5 Qb7 36 Rfd1 (in passing Qg6 is actually quite good forcing the win of the second piece but the text is not bad) b4 (black is hard pressed) 37 Rxd7 Qxd7 38 Rxd7 b3 (an attempt to close the diagonal) 39 Nh6+! Kh7 40 Nf7+ Kg8 40 Qh8 mate
