WCF officers' meetings

When is the next WCF officers' meeting? Are regular WCF members allowed to attend these meetings? What's the agenda for the next meeting? When was the last time an upcoming WCF officers' meeting was published anywhere to encourage participation or input? When were the minutes of any past meetings published in NWC magazine? And when were there any NWC magazine reports about any other prior meetings? The WA Class Championships seem to me to be an excellent time to schedule a meeting with the players in attendance to get feedback and volunteers for chess-related projects that could be begun or continued in our region. It doesn't have to be long. Maybe more than one meeting can be scheduled for new committees to get members to work on important tasks. No such meeting/s is in the schedule of the WA Class Championships. Why not try this out? My impression has been that over several years the WCF leadership has not wanted broad member participation in its affairs. Is this true about the current leadership? What is it doing to increase member participation to achieve the purpose and goals of the WCF organization. I'd like the WCF leadership to respond here in this forum.

I am sure that minutes of some WCF minutes have been published in past issues of NWC but I did not take the time to look up just which issues had which minutes. Hopefully Gary D will response about this. I look forward to WCF officers posting about the issues HG has raised.

We would like to see the minutes of the WCF officers meeting published in Northwest Chess magazine or posted on the Northwest Chess website on a regular basis. Two things have happened which will improve this situation. One is we have a new editor in Ralph Dubisch who will be more responsive regarding the magazine and its content. the second is we have much more space on the website to post additional material and my plan is to post the minutes to the website in a pdf format. The secretary has been good about providing the minutes and we do need to make them available to the members. I do not think that the leadership of WCF has not wanted broader participation of its members in the affairs of WCF. We do encourage participation of the members and we are trying to create ways so that we can be more interactive. This website and forum is a step in the right direction. The next WCF officers meeting is scheduled for October 28th (I believe) in the downtown Seattle area. Of course the main item on the agenda is the Washington Class Championship, the Challengers Cup and the State Championship as well. I will try and post the correct date and an agenda a week prior to the meeting and encourage attendance at the meeting.

I think it is a good idea to have a meeting at the Washington Class Championships for members regarding WCF activities and encourage volunteer participation. Remember this is a membership organization that relies on volunteers to operate. The more volunteers, the more that gets done and the more the membership benefits. We are always open to ideas, comments and suggestions. What gets done is limited to the number of volunteers we have and the personal time constraints that the volunteers and officers have to operate in.

I'd say that as of July 20, 2009, there has been insufficient, and untimely reporting of the business matters of the WCF that should concern all members. I continue to believe that the leadership does not wish to get the membership involved enough to make the organization grow. There needs to be more views sought out from more of the members and very few efforts are made in this regard. The WA Open was held in Spokane. An excellent report of the event was made in the recent issue of the NWC magazine largely due to the efforts of Kevin Korsmo and the Spokane Chess Club organizers, and a few of the top players, probably at the request of the organizers. What is the WCF doing elsewhere? They aren't putting material here in their own forum. That would be easy for even a volunteer group of officers to do. Why don't they use this site effectively?

Just because I haven't written to complain about them recently, it doesn't mean that I think the minutes reported of the WCF officers' meetings have ever been satisfactory or timely. Never been timely. But I just noticed that the 2011 Nov 27 officers' meeting minutes have been published. Exactly when they appeared I do not know, but I think it was after we entered 2012. There we learn that the officers are planning some norm event and some sort of scholastic event associated with the state championship, but that is not at all what seemed to appear on the tournament announcement website for about two days in this month of January regarding an Open, six round event over Presidents' Day weekend to coincide with the State Championship that was scheduled for the Marriott Town Center hotel which has now been removed. Mysterious goings on up there at the exclusive club. But I also ask you to enquire to the officers about the financial health of the organization. Look to my related complaints in the NWC chess forum in the topic I entitled 2011 State championship and other matters..

I still haven't received a response to my request at the WA Class for a financial report of the 2011 WA Class. Maybe I am haven't asked them in the right way. Maybe I haven't bowed lowly enough to them. I guess I need some help here..

If I have ever insulted you, call me out right here on the forum, cite the occasion and the date, tell me your name, and ask, no demand an apology of me, but if I have ever played you, and not acted discourteously to to you at any time, whether I won or lost, please consider my words, and my character, and come to my aid. I want some response in this matter and it really does not take much, and as a result this is giving me a sense of anger about this matter. I should not have to air this in the way I am doing. And finally, If you think as I do that there is something rotten in the Denmark of the WCF officers, you will ask me to join with you to kick these guys out of their offices as soon as possible. The WCF can be run better and deserves to be.

I have been known to make mistakes. I was too eager to get the posting out. Make that the financial report on the 2011 WA Open which they reported lost $1400.. By the way, by now there should be a financial report for the 2011 WA Class. How did that do?

The last officers meeting posted AT THE NWCHESS WEBSITE is about Aug 2012.. Why don't they tell us that they just don't want us to know what's happening?.. It refers to a decision not to have three sections in the state championship event.. But it is not clear about that. So for several months we've been hopeful of a tournament called the Presidents Congress that would replace this third section. And be held concurrently with the other players in the state championship.. Perhaps at the Redmond Town Center.. Well, No information has been shared with us until now when I have learned of a very misleading letter from the Pres., J. Sinanan to the secretary, G. Dorfner.... Which encourages him to go forward with an event at TCC, but which seems to have no connection with the state championship which concludes the same weekend... He praises the flyer of the event.. Why? This tourney specs make no sense.. It is not in a hotel. The rounds are only four hours long. Why have a six-hour break between rounds if you don't have the convenience of resting in your hotel room between rounds? But he did not care to tell G.D. this. Then further you see the tournament coordinator saying well later on in the year maybe they'll be less busy.. For what? Not to point someone in the right direction for holding a good event.

So right about now on an annual basis invitations are sent out to prospective players for the state champs.. Who knows what will constitute the event this year, but it certainly was not done in a way that attempted to keep the members informed of the possibilities.

The WCF officers are a despicable clique. The members should demand more openness and communication from the officers. Otherwise, non-scholastic chess in WA state will continue to be poorly served.

I don't think anyone's despicable; it's just that's everyone's busy and perhaps a bit lazy, and things tend to slide by. I would be glad to set up a category for WCF business on the new NWC blog if the WCF president (or other designated officer) would like to use it. The blog is easy to use and allows for communication without my needing to post stuff on the regular website.

I too have been having some serious communication problems with some of the WCF officers. I have asked for better communication but that hasn't helped. I don't think there is anything we can do to get better communication from the current group of officers.

Being busy is fine and often inevitable but people that are elected to the WCF board should not be lazy and not let things slide on WCF matters.
