Eight players competed in Tacoma's first USCF-rated tournament of the year, with a time control of game in 60 minutes. Two Experts, one Class A, one Class B, three Class C, and one Unrated accounted for the rating categories. Michael MacGregor and Howard Chen drew against each other and won their other three games to tie for 1st and 2nd with 3.5/4 points and a prize of $47.50 each. Drayton Harrison, exhausted after only a few hours of sleep the night before, won his first game and withdrew. Darby Monahan and Catherine Smith each took a fourth-round bye, finished with 1.5 points and split the U1700 prize fund of $28. The player of note in this tournament was Saurabh Chechi, an unrated player, who only lost once, won Stephen Buck and Catherine Smith, and took a fourth-round bye. His participation in future events is welcome.
