Ralph Dubisch named as new Northwest Chess Editor

Postby NWC_BM » Mon Oct 06, 2008 9:37 pm

At a board meeting in Portland, Oregon on Sunday, September 28, the Northwest Chess (NWC) board of directors named FM Ralph Dubisch of San Jose, California as the new editor of Northwest Chess magazine, effective with the November 2008 issue. Ralph served as guest editor for the September 2008 edition of the magazine, which was well-received by the Washington Chess Federation (WCF) and Oregon Chess Federation (OCF) memberships. While thanking editor Fred Kleist for his several years of service to Northwest Chess and to the chess community in the Northwest, the board decided that it was time to make a change.

There are many tasks; such as layout, themes, and covers, overall organization and consistency, and timeliness, that the editor has to perform in order to do a good job with the magazine, and so far I think he is doing very well. He has asked for material from us for the magazine. We players and members of the WCF and OCF need to respond by submitting chess related articles, or games, or reports on tourneys. Don't be hindered by thinking that your work is an egotistical display. Think positively, we need your work, and if it originates from your thoughts and feelings from your hard fought games or tournament experiences, so be it. It may be that no one else has your perspective. Without yours, we would be diminished. We need you.

So far, under Ralph's editorship, Bill McGeary, Dana Muller, and Harvey Greninger, have been contributing regularly to NWC, and I appreciate each of their columns. At this time though, I would like to especially commend Peter Prochaska for his wonderful article in the January 2009 issue. I think it is especially instructive. The special point is that he found this game from grandmaster level play, and found a way to use it to reveal to all players, not just beginners, something about the art of chess analysis in the transition from opening to middle game. Way to go. Thank you, Mr. Prochaska.
