Clinching First!!!

Postby PaulWeaver » Tue Mar 08, 2011 11:26 pm

Today my opponent resigned his game to me after blundering a bishop to me. This clinches first place for myself in the 13th smashed crabs minitournament at Paul Weaver (Francisbaron08)-mickbyrce Ruy Lopez 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 (down the stretch I went with this as my money opening, knowing I had to win to take first) a6 4 Ba4 Nf6 5 0-0 d6 6 c3 Nxe4 7 d4 (the most promising approach some research yielded) exd4 (an opening blunder found in any section on the Open Ruy) 8 Re1 (black must lose the piece. the problem for white is to win the knight and doing so relinquish the least material and counterplay) d5 9 Nxd4 Bd7 10 f3 Bd6 11 fxe4 0-0 12 Bxc6 bxc6 13 e5 (I felt it was most promising to keep the position closed. This move closes the dangerous diagonal) Bc5 14 Nd2! (bringing the queen side pieces into play) Qg5 15 Ne4! (the object of this move to post a knight on c5: 15 ... Bxd4+ 16 cxd4 Qg6 17 Nc5 or 15 ... Qe7 16 Nxc5 Qxc5 17 Be3 Qe7 18 Nb3! Re8 19 Bd4 followed by Nc5!) Qxe5?? 16 Nxc5 1-0 the point is now most easily scored after 16 ... Qd6 by 17 Nb3! followed by Be3, Nc5, Re2, Qd3, Rae1
