{"id":2667,"date":"2015-08-18T13:13:29","date_gmt":"2015-08-18T21:13:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nwchess.com\/blog\/?p=2667"},"modified":"2017-05-15T16:49:40","modified_gmt":"2017-05-16T00:49:40","slug":"spokane-fall-open-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nwchess.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/spokane-fall-open-results\/","title":{"rendered":"Spokane Falls Open Results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uschess.org\/msa\/XtblMain.php?201508162042.0\">CLICK HERE<\/a><\/strong> for USCF Crosstables.<\/p>\n<p><strong>James Stripes<\/strong> of Spokane won the event held on August 15-16, 2015 with a score of 4 wins and a half point bye in round 3. <strong>Steven Merwin<\/strong> of WA and <strong>Brian Woods<\/strong> of Ohio scored 4-1 to tie for 2nd.<\/p>\n<p>30 players took part under the direction of <strong>David Griffin<\/strong> of Spokane. 4 of the 30 were playing in their first USCF rated events.<\/p>\n<p>The same weekend a 4 game match was held for the Spokane City Chamionship between <strong>Michael Cambareri<\/strong> and <strong>Nikolay Bulakh<\/strong>. Those games ended with 2 wins each so a tie break of 5 games at G\/10 d3 was held. Michael won that 3-2.<\/p>\n<p><em>A report from the Spokane Chess Club Facebook page.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>James Stripes<\/strong> won this year&#8217;s edition of the Spokane Falls Open which attracted 30 players, many of them new to the sport. Stripes won all four games he played and enjoyed his &#8220;old man&#8217;s bye&#8221; on Saturday night. He stopped top seed <strong>Steve Merwin<\/strong> on board one in Sunday morning&#8217;s fourth round, and then defeated <strong>Kairav Joshi<\/strong> (also 3.5 by way of a Sunday morning bye) in round five. <strong>Merwin<\/strong> and <strong>Brian Wood<\/strong> of Columbus, Ohio finished second with scores of 4.0. Woods suffered his only loss to <strong>Joshi<\/strong> in round three, but secured the u\/1800 prize for efforts. The winners of the u\/1600 prize, with scores of 3.0, were <strong>Garrett Casey<\/strong>, <strong>Sam Comi<\/strong>, and <strong>Mitch Kilayko<\/strong>. The u\/1400 &amp; unrated section was won by newcomer <strong>Anand Wadikar<\/strong> (3.5), who secured a provisional rating of 1803 for his first tourney! Second place (3.0) in the section was shared by <strong>Braxton <\/strong><strong>Casey<\/strong> and <strong>Ron Weyland<\/strong>. Braxton also won the prize for biggest upset, with his 353 point victory edging <strong>Sam Comi<\/strong>&#8216;s 346 point upset!<\/p>\n<p>The event was played in conjunction with the City Championship match between <strong>Nikolay Bulakh<\/strong> and challenger <strong>Michael Cambareri<\/strong> at the Schoenberg Center at Gonzaga.
