Clatskanie Chess Club news:

NEW SUMMER HOURS - WEDNESDAYS

EVENTS

CHESS CAMP WITH FIDE CHESS MASTER CHUCK SCHULIEN August 1 & 2 Intermediate - Morning Session Advanced - Afternoon Session We've invited one of the best chess players we know to teach a chess camp right here in Clatskanie! Join FM Chuck Schulien as he shows players advanced techniques to improve their game and tactical maneuvers that will help them win! Registration is limited to keep groups small, sign up early to reserve your spot. Cost is only $25/person. Take advantage of FM Schulien's visit and schedule a private lesson as well!

"ODDITY DAY" August 17 3-6 pm Chess Enthusiasts Steve Reed (from Ilwaco) and Jon Coby (from Astoria) will bring their unique hand-made chess sets. Everyone is invited to come and play unusual games of chess. Refreshments will be provided.

For the last 20 years or so, Jon Coby (an expert-level chess player with a rating over 2000) has been developing a new kind of chess with extra pieces: The Squire - moves like a king but is unable to castle, The Prince - moves like a bishop and a knight, The Duke - moves like a rook and a knight, and The Wizard - moves like a rook knight and a bishop. The extra pieces add extra levels of mind-bending play.

Steve Reed, President of the Peninsula Chess Club and Rookie Knights children's Chess Club will bring his amazing hand-made sets: McCooey's Hexagonal, Glinski's Hexagonal, Triss 3-player, TriChess, Trigon, 3-man chess in the round, double-sided Deca and Hyper Chess with full size pieces.

Strategy for 3 players is very different and fun, offering a bit more of a challenge because of increased power of pieces. Jon points out that "Even though there are more pieces in Deca-Chess and Hyper-Chess, they are solidly based upon standard chess piece movement but have the advantage of avoiding advanced preparation in openings... your normal game should be strengthened just by the exercise your brain cells will get. You might find it a relief just to later return to "small" chess."

ADULT CHESS CLASSES Wednesdays 7-9 pm The club is now offering adult-only chess classes for adults interested in learning the game of chess. Cost is only $5/class! This is a great way for parents of our chess players, teachers and members of the community to learn chess in an adult atmosphere. We'll teach the basics of chess, tactics, educational aspects and we'll play chess as well! Coffee & snacks will be provided.

IMAGINATION QUEST RIDES AGAIN... AND AGAIN... AND AGAIN! June 29, July 27th & August 31st 3-4 pm The last Wednesday of every month this summer is "Imagination Quest" Day. A non-chess activity! From 3-4 pm we'll use creative problem solving skills to brainstorm solutions to creative quests. It's sort of like Junkyard Wars meets 007 with a few commercials thrown in here and there! Almost as much fun to watch as it is to participate.

WE'RE FIVE... LET'S JIVE! July 29 6 pm at Colvin's Restaurant The Clatskanie Chess Club started in the summer of 2000. This year, we're five years old and have over 150 members! Everyone is invited to our birthday party and chess success celebration. And we have a LOT to celebrate this year! From our outstanding state championship win to our international chess travelers and lots of things in between. Please join us for an evening of chess, good food and a bit of birthday cake! RSVP Kate Taylor 503-728-3754 or katetaylor@clatskanie.com

"SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISHER" July 20 3-4:30 pm Bring some popcorn and a friend on July 20th because we'll be showing our all time FAVORITE movie! This inspirational chess classic centers around child prodigy Josh Waitzkin and his rise to success. A wonderful family movie that teaches the value of perseverance and good sportsmanship.

PRIVATE LESSONS Mondays - Beginning at 4 pm Fridays - Beginning at 1 pm Other days and times available as well Beginning, intermediate and advanced private lessons offered by Clatskanie's best players! Students are encouraged to bring a game for analysis and will learn how to improve their game. Practicing chess over the summer is the key to Clatskanie Chess Club players success! Lessons are geared towards competitive players, but anyone who wishes to improve their game is encouraged to attend. Cost for private lessons is $10/hour or $5/half hour.
